Hearts of Gold Melon Guide

This heirloom melon from 1890’s is popular for its great taste and good yields. The seeds will produce small round netted fruits 2-3 lbs in weight with a delicious, sweet taste and thin rinds.

TO SOW

Honey Rock melons grow best in warmer weather between 65°F-90°F. They do great in bigger containers and small gardens. Bank on Seeds recommends direct seeding.

If Direct Seeding

  • Direct seed outside 4-6 weeks after last frost date; or
  • Direct seed into a container 18-20 inches deep and wide anytime of the year. It can be placed outside when the temperature is between 65°F-90°F; or

If Transplanting

Begin the growing season early and start the melon seeds indoors in trays or pods 2-3 weeks before the last frost date; Germination is best and fastest between 75°F-85°F. It can be transplanted outside 6 weeks later.

Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 18 inches apart with rows spaced 18-24 inches apart. Germination will take 5-10 days.

TO GROW

Melons like well-draining, sandy soil with lots of organic matter. They also like full sun and warm growing conditions. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but let it dry out fully between watering. Check the top 1-2 inches of soil and if it is dry, then water it. In the last 2 weeks, water less frequently.

Apply mulch to the top of soil to retain moisture, regulate temperature and deter weeds. Melons need 5-5-5 fertilizer or aged compost every 3-4 weeks.

TO REAP

Days to maturity take 90 days. Once the fruit reaches 2-3 lbs. You can gently twist it off the vine. You will also be able to smell the fruit through the skin.
